Oninaki Wiki

Oninaki (Japanese: 鬼ノ哭ク邦, oni no naku kuni) is an action role-playing game from Tokyo RPG Factory, developers of I am Setsuna and Lost Sphear, and published by Square Enix. It was announced in February 2019, and was released on August 22, 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam.

The game follows Kagachi, a young Watcher who upholds the tenets of reincarnation. People are forbidden to mourn the loss of loved ones, for grief fills the dead with regret, causing them to lose their way — and a Lost Soul cannot be reborn, instead becoming monsters.

As a Watcher, Kagachi is a keeper of The Living World and The Beyond. He moves between both worlds, fighting monsters, saving Lost Souls and sending them on to their next life. In battle he can manifest the powers of souls he has saved, called Daemons, to use their weapons and skills, and can switch between Daemons to use the one that best suits the situation.

Trivia[]

  • The game's Japanese title is written in a cursive calligraphic style, which is now rarely used except for artistic effect.
  • The first character of the Japanese title also appears in the background of the game's English title.
  • The kanji (oni) is usually translated as 'ogre' or 'demon', but originally meant 'departed spirit'. It may be have been chosen for this double meaning, to represent the game's lost souls who become monsters if not rescued.
